Course Description

Through a case-based approach, this 3-hour course emphasizes  key considerations applicable to the rehabilitation professional in effectively  managing patients with COVID-19. Case studies will overview pathophysiological considerations,  lines and tubes, oxygenation considerations and multi-system involvement to provides  the therapist with insights in managing this unique population of patients. Further, examples will elucidate “unstable” from “stable-unstable” labels and emphasize a  response-dependent approach to managing these patients. Evaluation strategies, organized clinical decision making, and effective treatment techniques for each case, provides therapists with a contemporary understanding of the value they can bring to patients, and the health care system during these unprecedented times.       

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the learner will:

  1. Recognize  the evidence for the use of rehabilitation in patients with COVID-19. 
  2. Review  information from the medical record in determining the medical complexity of a patient  with COVID-19.  
  3. Identify three examination techniques to recognize a  patient’s clinical stability in the setting of moderate or critical illness. 
  4. Implement  three common treatment activities into a treatment session.
